The Superlative Arms AR-15 Piston Driven Gas System - Retrofit Kit
Upgrade your current Direct Impingement (DI) rifle to a high-performance piston-driven operating system, or use this kit as the foundation for a new build.
Why convert to a Piston System?
A piston-driven system offers several advantages over traditional Direct Impingement systems > Improved reliability / Cooler operating temperatures / Reduced carbon fouling inside the receiver / Less exposure to gas blowback (hot toxic gases) when using suppressors
Instead of directing the gas pressure through a gas tube into the Bolt Carrier Group (BCG), the SA system uses an operating rod (op rod) to cycle the action. This results in a cleaner, cooler, and more efficient operating system. Compared to other piston systems currently on the market, the Superlative Arms piston system is lightweight, minimalistic in design, and easy to maintain. The reduced carbon buildup also lowers cleaning time and maintenance requirements. This system is trusted by recreational shooters, competitive shooters, industry professionals, law enforcement, and government agencies.
The SA Piston Carrier
The SA Piston Carrier is one of the defining features of the system.
Key Features > One-piece solid carrier design / DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) coating for easier cleaning / Requires less lubrication which reduces carbon buildup / Dimpled carrier key helps center the op rod with every strike / Anti-tilt carrier skids reduce drag in the buffer tube / Full-auto rated
Important Note: The Superlative Arms Piston Kit does not include a Bolt Assembly (Bolt, Cam Pin, Firing Pin, and Firing Pin Retainer). Sold separately. Gas rings are not required with the piston carrier and may be removed. A loose fit of the bolt inside the carrier is normal and does not affect reliability or accuracy.
The SA Piston Gas Block
The SA Piston Gas Block shares many features with the SA DI adjustable gas block but incorporates a piston plug that houses the operating rod.
Key Features > Forward-facing controls for easier adjustment and maintenance / Features the Superlative Arms Patented Bleed Off® Mode gas system technology where the gas is vented forward away from operator instead of being restricted like conventional adjustable gas blocks
BENEFITS OF BLEED OFF MODE
Cleaner & Cooler Operation > Proper adjustment uses the amount of gas necessary to cycle the action.
Reduced Wear > Lower operating pressure reduces stress on the bolt carrier group and upper receiver components.
Reduced Recoil > The system helps decrease felt recoil for faster follow-up shots.
Cleaner Adjustment System > Our patented locking detent mechanism is exterior of the gas block reducing contamination and carbon buildup. All other adjustable gas blocks have an internal detent.
Suppressor Performance > Ideal for SBR and suppressor applications due to excess pressure venting out the front of the gas block, away from the operator, while reducing blowback to the shooter.
GAS BLOCK CONFIGURATIONS
Journal Sizes > .625" / .750"
Attachment Options > Clamp-On: Easiest installation method / No barrel drilling required / Uses three horizontal clamping screws. Solid Set Screw: Lowest profile option / Requires dimpling the barrel twice to .070" depth / Uses two set screws / Includes milled flat for optional cross-pinning
***Always verify hand guard compatibility using the schematics provided on the product pages***
The SA Piston Op Rod
The SA Piston System is available in four gas system lengths > Pistol length / Carbine length / Mid length / Rifle length
A measuring ruler is included in the kit to verify gas port location for compatibility.
Construction > Made from H-13 tool steel / Precision machined and Nitrided / Designed specifically for Superlative Arms gas port locations
Important note for pistol length gas systems: There is no universal industry standard for gas port location on pistol length barrels. If the gas port location does not match the provided specifications, the operating rod may bend. Because most barrel manufacturers design barrels for Direct Impingement systems rather than Piston Systems, proper measurement and verification are critical for a successful installation. Before installation, review the barrel schematics carefully to confirm all critical dimensions.
